A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER
ABOUT THE GALA
UCI MIND is proud to honor William Edwards, Steve O’Leary and Keith Swayne with the UCI MIND Award and the Brower Group with the Community Leadership Award for their inspirational commitment to Alzheimer’s research.
Widely respected among the scientific community, UCI MIND is a non-profit Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center designated by the National Institutes of Health. It is one of 30 such centers across the United States and the only center in Orange County.
Our goal is to generate the philanthropic support required to accelerate research today for cures tomorrow. We hope you will join us for this special evening of fun and philanthropy that will bring us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s disease.
William Edwards is CEO of Edwards Global Services, Inc., a company that expands U.S. businesses internationally.
Edwards’s wife, Nancy, a physical therapist and geriatric healthcare manager, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 58. Edwards cared for Nancy for 12 years, until her passing at age 70. Nancy participated in multiple studies at UCI.
Since her passing, Edwards has served on the Leadership Council of UCI MIND helping to raise awareness and support for clinical research at the Institute through his philanthropy and his voice. Edwards and his daughters further support UCI MIND through the Nancy Imlay Edwards Foundation.
Steve O'Leary is Vice Chairman of The Shipyard, a national marketing and advertising agency.
With a successful, 40-plus year career in the industry both in New York and Orange County, his wife, Patty, worked with him in their business until her memory issues emerged. Patty was diagnosed in 2012 with Alzheimer’s and passed away five years later at the age of 69.
Steve O’Leary was among the first to enroll in the UCI Consent-to-Contact (C2C) Registry and has been volunteering as the pro-bono head of marketing at UCI MIND for two years. O’Leary is dedicated to informing the community about the importance of clinical research at UCI MIND, and has given numerous talks to promote opportunities for people to volunteer.
Keith Swayne is the retired CEO of Case Swayne Co./International Food Solutions, chairman of the Orange County Community Foundation, and a member of numerous non-profit and for-profit boards.
His wife, Judy, served as executive aide to Supervisor Thomas Riley, Orange County Board of Supervisors; envisioned and created the Orange County Community Foundation in 1989, and served as President and CEO until her retirement in 2000. She was also a philanthropist and served as a mentor and member of numerous non-profit boards. In 2006 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and passed away in 2014 at the age of 73.
In 2013, Swayne issued a challenge gift to UCI MIND donors that raised more than $300,000 to demonstrate the feasibility of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) technology as a tool in Alzheimer’s research. Since then, UCI MIND and its partners have generated over $17 million in grant funding and have provided hundreds of stem cell lines to researchers at UCI and around the world.
